Tony is the Chair of the Australian Management Committee for the  National Eco Certification Program and was integral to the development and implementation of this innovative and World’s Best Practice certification scheme which has been successfully operating since 1994. This voluntary, self funded and independently audited program was developed by industry for industry, addressing the need to identify genuine ecotourism and nature tourism operators in Australia. Tony was also a board member of the National Tourism Accreditation Working Group (2003-4) and on the Board and Vice Chair of Tourism Accreditation Australia Ltd (2005-8). He was also Chair of the working committee that completed the International Ecotourism Standard - a joint exercise between the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism and Ecotourism Australia and licensed to Green Globe.

Tony Charters and Associates is also committed to improving the take up of best practices in the tourism industry. The team has been integrally involved in the development and implementation of certification programs and sustainability criteria at the national level and the assessment of best practices for various tourism organizations and businesses.

Aim: Develop and pilot a national climate change certification scheme for broad scale use across the tourism industry.

Services:  Develop a range of robust and practical adaptation and emissions reduction criteria. Provide governance and operations guidelines for the operation of the certification system.

Results: The voluntary scheme utilises a standardised star rating mechanism to rate operator efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of their operations and includes an independent auditing requirement. The scheme has been very successful with over 24 certified operators within the first 12months of operation.

Aim: Conduct an environmental sustainability audit of Tourism Australia’s head office operations.

Services: Measure and benchmark the environmental footprint of the head office and key international trade events (the Australian Tourism Exchange and the Visiting Journalists Program).  Provide a set of indicators and system to monitor this footprint over time. Develop an Action Plan to decrease both the organisation’s environmental footprint and that of its trade events. Provide a toolkit to assist Tourism Australia in rolling out a similar sustainability audit and preparing action plans across its 17 international offices.

Rapid Assessment - Alpine Resort Management Plans

Aim: Conduct a rapid assessment of the Strategic Management Plans of five key Victorian Alpine Resorts. Assess the consistency of the plans with relevant Victorian legislation as well as the Victorian 2020 Alpine Resorts Strategy.

Services: Develop a matrix of assessment criteria to identify areas where improvements were required.  Consult with resort management boards to discuss the evaluation results and ground truth recommended improvements.

Eco Certification Assessment
The Voyages Hotels and Resort Group 2006
 

Aim: Provide assistance and advice for Voyages regarding the process of gaining Eco Certification across key properties within their portfolio.

Services: Conduct sustainability audits for several nature based tourism products including Heron Island Resort, Lizard Island Resort and Silky Oaks.

Results: Several of Voyages’ properties and tours have since achieved advanced Eco Certification by Ecotourism Australia.
