Tony Charters has been involved in fund raising and sponsorship programs for more than two decades.

In the not for profit sector Tony has developed and implemented sponsorship programs  and fund raising strategies for organisations such as Ecotourism Australia, Sustainable Tourism Australia, The International Ecotourism Society and the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia including the funding of the following major programs:

  • Grant applications the for development of Eco Certification and regular update of the world’s first national certification scheme for the nature based and ecotourism industry;
  • Grant applications to fund national research programs;
  • Fundraising to develop the Climate Action Certification program, a national certification scheme for the tourism industry;
  • Fundraising of $500,000 to run the 2002 International Ecotourism Conference in Cairns as part of the International Year of Ecotourism celebrations;
  • Development of a sponsorship strategy to fund Ecotourism Australia’s National Secretariat from an annual sponsorship program. His fundraising efforts have delivered more than $2m net to Ecotourism Australia in the past decade.

In addition to the development of innovative approaches to fund raising and sponsorship Tony also secures the funds himself – utilising:

  • his understanding of the imperatives that underpin an organisation’s preparedness to support a particular initiative;
  • tailored sponsorship programs that suit the goals and priorities of individual potential sponsor organisations;
  • payment scheduling to align with the organisational needs of organisations;
  •  his extensive business and government networks.

Throughout his career Tony has worked in the public, private and not for profit sectors and has developed an in-depth understanding of the culture and operating conditions of each. As a senior executive in business and government he has been responsible for the decision to sponsor organisations - this experience is vital in developing fundraising and sponsorship strategies.

Most of Tony’s sponsorship success comes from a personalised approach – meeting with senior executives of the target organisation, gaining an understanding of their priorities and developing a specific proposal that suit the organisations priorities, positioning and budget.
