Tourism Business Development

Tony Charters and Associates are experts in conducting scoping and feasibility studies for new tourism and recreation concepts; in improving product and service delivery efficiencies for existing businesses; and in developing innovative and integrated concept, building, infrastructure and product designs across:

  • accommodation,
  • tours,
  • attractions, and
  • events.

Tony in particular has a long history of developing innovative tools for business development. He was integral, for example, to the development of the Ecotourism Rapid Assessment Model (ECORAM) which provides guidance for operators in determining the feasibility of environmental tourism ideas. He also directed a range of self help publications for small businesses including:

  • Grow Your Ecotourism Business;
  • A Tourism Project Feasibility Guide; and
  • The Tour Operator Tool Kit – Strategies for Business Planning and Growth.

Aim: Assess the business viability of a not for profit wildlife sanctuary in New South Wales.

Services: Conduct an analysis of current operations, market positioning, potential partnerships, funding and alternative siting options. Provide a series of recommendations for better market positioning, business development and product management to achieve cost savings and improved efficiencies. Identify target market segments and improved marketing and communications strategies.

Aim: Conduct a feasibility study for an environmental education centre in Wynnum-Manly (Queensland).

Services: Conduct a SWOT analysis of potential Discovery Centre uses. Evaluate alternative sites and identify potential public/private partnerships via stakeholder and government agency consultation. Provide eco-design building and infrastructure options; a product and service menu; viable management arrangements; and cost estimates for establishing and operating the Centre.  Deliver an integrated product and business development plan with sustainable building and landscaping design elements.

Aim: Deliver a preliminary concept plan outlining recommended sustainable development and enhancement strategies for the Conservation Park and Koala Centre.

Services: Synthesize existing market research and conduct a park visitor survey. Organise and facilitate a community and government stakeholder focus group. Conduct a market positioning and competitor analysis. Review planning and regulatory opportunities and constraints. Deliver a strategic product and business development strategy to boost product quality and the quality of the visitor experience.

Aim: Develop a nature based recreation concept plan integrating an Assisted Living Village into a primarily undeveloped natural area for a not for profit aged and community services organisation.

 Services: Conduct an assessment of the cultural, community, recreation, commercial and ecological values of the site. Develop a concept plan integrating these values.

Result: Under the overall theme of Health and Healing in a Coastal Landscape - the plan involved ecological rehabilitation, a community nursery, interpretive trails, a community square for markets, youth activities and a community Wellness Centre.

Aim: Develop a preliminary nature based recreation concept plan for an extensive Council owned wetlands area.

Services: Conduct a market analysis and audit of tourism attractions, assets and products. Develop a concept plan integrating conservation objectives, environmental and historical interpretation and providing for a range of community activities, recreation, commercial enterprises and cross cultural involvement. Include sustainable building and landscaping design elements. Provide an overall water conservation theme as well as branding and marketing ideas suited to the profiles of identified target markets.
