Tony Charters’ core competencies are focused on research, policy, planning and development. In particular Tony has long-term experience in natural resource management in the fields of forestry, national park and protected area management. This experience has been gained at an operational and senior management level and at an Advisory and Management Board level. For the past 20 years Tony has also held senior executive roles in tourism management and operations while maintaining an advisory role in natural resource management. Throughout his career to date he has worked in various agencies in the public sector for 18 years and 16 years within the private sector – 11 of which has been operating his own company.
He has held senior executive roles for over 20 years and had provided briefings and policy advice to CEO’s, Ministers and Ministerial Councils for that entire period. He provides well-reasoned, independent and pragmatic advice to clients.
He serves on three prestigious international industry boards as a highly respected advocate.
In addition to his professional qualifications in environmental science and regional planning he has extensive experience in corporate communications, media management and advocacy. He has significant experience as a media spokesperson and has held a number of roles, which involved Parliamentary and professional conference speech writing. For the past seven years he has edited a highly acclaimed industry journal called Tourforce, which is distributed to 18,000 industry professional worldwide.
Tony has an exceptional record for innovation and success in natural resource management from his initial career in Forestry, Brisbane Forest Park Authority, National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Queensland Recreation Areas Management Board and the Wet Tropics Management Authority.
He has held Ministerial appointments with a number of Queensland and Commonwealth government boards.
Tony has a Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a longstanding commitment to regional development through the annual national conference he initiated - SEGRA (Sustainable Economic Development for Regional Australia) – now in its 18th year. Tony has very successfully inaugurated six national and international conferences in Australia that have gone on to become long-term and highly respected events.
He has an excellent understanding of local, state and national government responsibilities and current affairs. Tony’s appreciation of government and industry, his experience in designing and conducting high level conferences and business planning meetings was instrumental to the success of DestinationQ 2012 AND 2013.
Tony was awarded an AM - Order of Australia in 2014. He was recognised as a Member of the Order of Austrlaia (General Division) for significant service to the ecotourism industry, particularly to nature-based recreation and to environmental education and visitor programs.
